Nigel Wright, Former Harper Chief of Staff, Dies at 62

Nigel S. Wright, the strategic mastermind behind the Conservative Party’s rise and former chief of staff to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, died on September 30, 2025, at age 62. Wright’s innovative approaches to fundraising, data-driven campaigning, and policy modernization reshaped Canadian politics—and his later business leadership at Onex Corporation underscored his versatile impact.

Political Innovation and Campaign Mastery

Wright emerged as a key architect of the Conservative movement in 2003 when he became one of three founding directors of the Conservative Fund Canada. Under his guidance, the fund transformed into a sophisticated engine for election financing, pioneering advanced voter databases and analytics that were instrumental in securing Conservative victories in 2006 and a majority government in 2011.

As chief of staff from 2010 to 2013, Wright oversaw the Prime Minister’s Office operations, forging stronger ties between government and industry. He championed the creation of a centralized digital portal for federal services, reducing administrative barriers for citizens and businesses, and launched a Policy Innovation Lab to apply data analytics to public programs—initiatives that laid the groundwork for modern e-government in Canada.

Wright’s tenure in Ottawa also saw him convene expert advisory panels on healthcare reform and fiscal policy, guiding Canada through challenging budgetary debates and international trade negotiations. His leadership style combined legal rigor—rooted in his Harvard Law School training—with a collaborative approach that engaged stakeholders across sectors.

Lasting Influence on Conservative Strategy

Even after returning to the private sector, Wright remained an influential strategist within the Conservative Party. His annual policy workshops became a fixture for MPs and campaign teams, refining platforms and electoral tactics.

Bay Street Leadership

Parallel to his political career, Wright built a distinguished reputation in private equity at Onex Corporation. Joining Onex in 1997, he helped expand the firm’s global footprint. After relocating to London in 2014, he led the establishment of Onex’s European platform and served on the boards of major portfolio companies, including Acacium Group, Parkdean Resorts, and Tes Global. In February 2024, he was named Co-Head of Onex Partners, overseeing one of Canada’s premier buyout platforms.

A Legacy of Service

Wright’s career bridged public service and commerce, marked by a commitment to innovation, integrity, and collaboration. Bobby Le Blanc, President and CEO of Onex, described him as “the consummate gentleman who set the standard for professionalism,” while former Prime Minister Harper lauded him as “a master strategist whose tireless work behind the scenes helped shape a new era of Conservative governance.” The enduring strategies Wright crafted, both in politics and business, will continue to influence Canada’s institutions and leaders.

Harper said in a eulogy on X: “Nigel loved his country and believed in the value of public service, having twice served in the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, including as my Chief of Staff. He was also a man of faith who cared about his fellow citizens and generously supported a range of philanthropic causes throughout his life.”
